There's lots of wedding checklists out there that tell you all the things you "need" for a wedding, but there are only four requirements to get legally married in the state of Nebraska.
- a groom
- a bride
- a marriage license
- an officiant
I'm pretty sure we've already got the first two sorted and the third won't be too much trouble, but we're still missing the fourth. We got turned down by a pastor this week because we're *gasp* living in sin. Apparently we would have to move out for him to marry us so that we could move in together...so now we're hunting for a less judgmental religious officiant, although we briefly considered changing the groom's address to the shed behind the house. It does have an air conditioner (unknown whether the unit is in working condition or not).
We also have a back-up plan. Colorado is less than an hour from our wedding venue. The state of Colorado allows couples to
self-solemnize their marriage. Basically, the bride and groom just sign a piece of paper saying they're married. We could drive down the morning of the wedding, sign the papers, and then have the ceremony with family and friends to read our vows and get our party on. I freaking love this idea! But the groom is not entirely convinced of this plan, so for the time-being we'll continue searching for another officiant...
