The Odds Were Good
In the summer of 2009, Cody and Andi both accepted internships with a company in the small town of Broken Bow, Nebraska. They had gone to the same small college for four years, were in the same major, and even knew many of the same people, but had never actually met. Housing options were limited in the town, so the company put all four of its new interns up in a house used for medical interns. Cody was the only male in the house all summer, so his odds were good. Cody and Andi started spending time together and would stay up late talking. They don't know how they managed to get to work on time that summer.
When they both returned to school that fall, they decided they rather liked spending time together and started claiming one another in public.
Cross Country
In the spring of 2010, Andi was offered a job in North Carolina. Cody had no job offers at the time and they made the decision to move with Andi to North Carolina, even though they'd only known one another for a year. Not everyone was supportive of his decision and he received some inquiries about jobs in other states after making it. But in June they relocated together to North Carolina.
It only took him six weeks after relocating to find a temporary position as a drafter. It may have had something to do with Andi's affectionately referring to him as her housewife. Two months later, he landed a full-time gig as a manufacturing engineer just across the border in South Carolina. Around this time they also acquired two hand-me-down cats from Andi's parents trying to thin their menagerie.
The Incident at the Climbing Gym
Because Not Every Proposal Can Be Romantic...
November 30, 2010
Cody and Andi met up at the climbing gym in Charlotte after work. When Andi returned from getting changed into her climbing clothes, Cody had already grabbed their gear. He even offered to put her shoes on for her. He knelt down and put on the right shoe, but the left shoe wouldn't go on. There was something in it. It was a jewelry box (note: these shoes are owned by the gym and used by multiple people throughout the day...something he didn't really think about). He pulled it out of the shoe and...
"Andrea Eleanor Kramer, will you marry me?"
"Seriously?"
It wasn't exactly the answer he was expecting.
Andi was definitely surprised. And wasn't really sure that proposals should be this surprising. She had expected him to start looking at rings sometime in the next year. And, yes, she was also wondering what man proposes to his girlfriend in a climbing gym.
After about a day she gave him a solid answer to his question. And, obviously, we know what that answer was...
